What do our parents say about a Brother Rice Education?
Our family relocated to Michigan 8 years ago and our son attended elementary and middle school in Bloomfield Hills. When the time arrived for high school consideration, our family was truly open to high school options (both public and private) for our son and we did not have preferences or past biases. We explored all our options which led us to Brother Rice. After visiting several schools as well as shadow day experiences, we chose Brother Rice for 2 main reasons. First and foremost, our son said he felt good about his experience in comparison to other schools he visited. He felt the Brother Rice experience was different, and he could see himself there. Secondly, as parents we felt a genuine care, support, and partnership we had not felt at other schools we visited. As an example, we only mentioned our son was interested in Architecture as a career Principal O. personally invited our son back after a shadow day to meet the Architecture Teacher and to spend time visiting his class. No other school did that.

As an alumni of Brother Rice, I know that my experience at Brother Rice was the educational and spiritual foundation for everything I have done since I graduated. When my son Luke was born, I remember already knowing that one day I wanted to be able to give him the same opportunity my parents gave me to experience the community and the spirit of Brother Rice, while also encouraging him to make it his own unique experience. To this day, the values I learned at Brother Rice and the relationships I gained continue to influence my life and I am sure the same will be true for him, and I am forever thankful for what Brother Rice has done for both of us.

I was impressed with the ability of Brother Rice High School to adjust to the “Pandemic” effortlessly. The transition was as if during their yearly planning meetings that they were able to discern this event taking place before it actually occurred. The distance learning initiative began only a few days before the actual government mandated shutdown. I was also impressed with how our Principal recognized the graduating class of 2020. He visited each student’s home to personally congratulate them “A personal touch of class.” Way to go Brother Rice!!! I want to give a congrats to all the teachers and administrations for working hard under this type of pressure and not missing a beat.

Choosing Brother Rice High School has to be the single best decision we have made for our boys. That being said, it wasn’t easy. We were not alumni, we did not live close (Rochester), we did not have any connections (like we did to some of the other private schools) and we knew very little about Rice, other than some (incorrect) stereotypes. From the moment our son shadowed, he fell in love with the school, and even after we shared our concerns (distance and knowing anyone) he put our fears to rest by simply stating he felt like Rice would challenge him in ways the others could not …force him to grow & get out of his comfort zone. No truer words could have been spoken. From academics to athletics and many experiences in between, both our boys have been challenged and stretched to be their best. Through the terrific Band of Brothers & Brotherhood Rice offers along with volunteering alongside classmates; the amazing Kairos experience, paired with the incredible teachers, administrators and staff, our expectations have been blown away. As our senior gets ready to head on to the University of Michigan, and our freshmen gets ready for his sophomore year, we feel beyond bless that we listened to that young boy who knew in his heart just what he needed – the well rounded, incredible education & experience of Brother Rice. Live Jesus in our Hearts, Forever!
