Warrior Wrestling Team Building Momentum in the Pursuit of Championship Glory
The Warrior Wrestling program is on the rise, driven by a powerful wave of momentum that has breathed new life into the team. Not long ago, the roster consisted of just two dedicated competitors. Today, it’s inspiring to see the program thriving with a full lineup and competing at the highest level. For three consecutive years, the Warriors have reached the team state championships, and the 2024 Individual State Championship victory of Rico Saenz further underscores their remarkable progress.
Head Coach Scott Kolesky, now in his fifth season, praised Rico and the entire team for their dedication to building a winning culture within the program. Under the leadership of Kolesky and Assistant Coach Jim Nelson ’85, the Warriors have secured district and regional titles and have advanced to the state finals. Though Lowell High School remains a formidable rival, the Warriors are focused and determined to bring home even more championships.
The 2023-24 season’s success was fueled by a blend of seasoned leaders and promising young talent. Sophomores Richard Davis, Owen Stropoli, Deacon MacNeill, and Caleb Steele all qualified for individual regionals, with Davis earning All-State honors by placing fifth at the state finals.
First-year varsity wrestlers Grant Sarris and Emmanuel Shango also made strong impressions, with Sarris posting an impressive 28-13 record before an injury ended his season early at districts. Senior Sebastian Abro qualified for regionals, while juniors Alex Rabban, a state qualifier, Mateo Pesaros, and Grant Cummins all contributed significantly to the team’s success.
With standout wrestlers like Rico Saenz and Richard Davis returning, the Warriors are well-positioned for even greater accomplishments. Coach Kolesky credits these key leaders for their ability to inspire confidence and thrive under pressure. Supported by a solid foundation and a new wave of emerging talent, the Brother Rice Warriors are poised to become a formidable contender in the team state finals for years to come.
State Champion Rico Saenz ‘25
Rico Saenz ‘25 has proven that perseverance, strategy, and dedication can lead to greatness. Rico made history by becoming the Warriors’ first individual state wrestling champion in 32 years. Competing in the 126-pound weight class, Rico dominated the MHSAA Division 2 Wrestling Individual State Championships.
Rico’s journey to the top was not without its challenges. A dislocated elbow prior to the season threatened to derail his trajectory. However, instead of letting the injury hold him back, Rico used it as an opportunity to improve in other areas. Unable to lift weights for upper body strength, he focused on his legs, speed, agility, and technique—attributes that ultimately gave him an edge on the mat. He studied wrestling videos to refine his craft and emerged stronger.
Like many athletes in their pre-match routines, Rico had listened to high-energy tracks to pump himself up, but he made a switch and discovered that calmer music helped him stay focused and perform better during matches. This approach, coupled with his physical and mental preparation, paid off in the form of multiple accolades.
For Rico, his state championship win was not just a personal triumph but a testament to the power of resilience and teamwork. There is no doubt that he will continue to inspire his teammates and lead the Warriors to even greater heights.
