Alex Thoresen ’12 Mission Trip Scholarship
Ben Waechter ’27 & Fintan Mott ’27 Receive 2026 Alex Thoresen ’12 Memorial Mission Trip Scholarships
At Brother Rice, some of the most meaningful lessons happen beyond the classroom. This is the case for our Peru Mission Trip, which gives students the life-changing opportunity to serve others and experience a very different culture, as they grow in faith and compassion. Accompanied by Campus Minister Mr. Thane Hall, the boys will be boots-on-the-ground, working with the Christian Brothers North America Immersion Program. Most notably, ministering to a family in need by building a home on the mountainside.
As it was with Alex in 2011, this immersive mission trip opens our students’ eyes and hearts to the meaningful impact they can make in the world by serving others.

In 2018, the Thoresen Family and friends established the Alex Thoresen ’12 Memorial Mission Trip Scholarship at Brother Rice after losing Alex to a courageous battle with cancer. As a senior, Alex traveled to Peru with fellow Warriors, and his life was changed. Alex developed a deep commitment to serving others, especially those most in need. Before his passing, he left us all with a powerful challenge:
“Perform an act of kindness for a stranger… Spread a little love on my behalf. Do some good.”
To date, this scholarship has sponsored nine Brother Rice students, enabling them to “do some good” and experience this transformative mission in Lima, Peru — an opportunity they may not have otherwise had.

We invite you to help carry forward Alex’s legacy in the hearts of our mission-bound students at Brother Rice. Your support will continue to open doors for deserving Warriors to serve, grow, and “do some good” in the world.
