Back on Top, Right Where They Belong
The legacy of Brother Rice lacrosse added another storied chapter as the Warriors claimed their 17th MHSAA Division 1 Lacrosse State Title, one that many say will stand among the most memorable in program history.
Facing longtime Catholic League rival CC in the state final for the 11th time, the Warriors overcame adversity, pressure, and a fierce opponent to reclaim their spot at the top. Down 3-0 early in the first quarter, the Warriors showed the grit and heart that have come to define the program over the past two decades. They battled back, play by play, tying the game in regulation and eventually sealing a dramatic 9-8 victory in overtime.
It was the 81st state championship in Brother Rice history — but it wasn’t just another title; it was an amazing comeback in every sense of the word. After falling short of the state championship game in 2024 for the first time in program history, the hunger to return was stronger than ever. Adding to the stakes, CC had bested Rice twice during the regular season, both by a single goal. The odds were stacked, but so were our resolve and heart.
The game-winning moment came 12 seconds into overtime. Face-off specialist Danny Holt secured possession, pushing forward against a scrambling CC defense. From there, sophomore defenseman Ben Waechter, who had been a steady presence all season, stepped into the spotlight. He launched what would be the winning shot and then ran the length of the field in euphoria, chased by teammates pouring onto the turf to celebrate.
Waechter’s goal ended CC’s undefeated season and their hopes of back-to-back championships. For the Warriors, it was sweet redemption, restoring their place atop the state and silencing any doubts after last year’s uncharacteristic absence from the final.
The 2025 championship game will be remembered not just for the thrilling finish but for what it represented: the resilience of a program built on tradition, excellence, and an absolute refusal to quit. It was a title earned through effort, sacrifice, and a deep belief in one another.
As the team hoisted the trophy once more, the message was clear: the Warriors are back on top, right where they belong.
